Therapeutic Approach

Sometimes clients are interested in what types of therapy I use or what is my “theoretical orientation”  In short, I work with each person as an individual and use an eclectic mixture of therapeutic techniques that fits well for each person. I am a strong believer that counseling is simply a vehicle for active learning, and that the ultimate goal is to help people build on the strengths they already have so they can do something for themselves to improve their own physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Together we will develop specific goals for therapy and an action plan. We will cultivate your own personal set of tools and strategies that you will be able to use long after counseling has been completed.

With that being said, I utilize therapeutic approaches mainly from the following theoretical perspectives:

Solution-Focused Approach- This approach focuses on the client’s strengths and previous successes. The goal is solution-building more than problem solving. We will work to find alternatives to current and specific undesired situations, patterns of behavior, thoughts and interactions that are not working effectively. Skill-building and interventions will help you create a pathway to making your visions a reality.

REBT Approach - This is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy that is a combination of exploring your cognitive, behavioral and emotive self and learning techniques that you can use to help yourself feel better physically and emotionally, and to engage in healthier behaviors. Clients will begin to see exactly where their negative feelings and experiences are evolving from, and learn the power to eventually “become their own therapist” and create change for themselves.

Transactional Analysis Approach – This is a form of therapy that helps the client develop awareness, options and skills for problem management and personal development in their daily lives. This is done through the enhancement of their strengths, resources and functioning. The counselor and client will work together to solve “here and now” problems while creating productive problem solving behaviors for the future.

Meditation Therapy Approach – This form of treatment helps to reduce stress by helping the client learn to gain control of their thoughts and emotions, reduce mental distraction, and rejuvenate their mind and body. It focuses on the simple form of mindfulness that is available to everyone at every moment. I provide a structured framework for the client’s self-reflection. For specific problems such as anxiety, chronic pain, phobias, OCD, or sleep problems, guided imagery or progressive relaxation techniques are sometimes utilized.

Object-Relations Approach- This form of counseling emphasizes interpersonal relationships- especially surrounding the significant person that is the object or target of the client’s feelings. We will delve into self discovery by examining how past relationships affect a person in the present.
